Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman have revolutionized the study of marriage. For nearly five decades they have conducted research on all facets of relationships, including parenting issues. At the Gottman Institute, they developed an approach that not only supports and repairs troubled relationships, but strengthens happy ones.
The Gottman Institute provides live workshops and take-home training materials for couples, while the Gottman Card Decks app is a mobile app that supports therapy an expands awareness of the Gottman brand.
The challenge
The Gottman Institute was looking to create a direct-to-consumer app experience to build brand awareness and empower therapists to assign couples with take-home exercises. They needed it to be on-brand, easy to navigate, and compelling to new customers.
What we did
The app did not require deep integration with native APIs. As such, we built it with React Native by writing it once in JavaScript, leveraging the power of the React framework, and publishing versions of the app for both iOS and Android with only a handful of changes required for each platform.
This allowed us to move efficiently while creating an experience that aligned with the existing brand. To accomplish this, we also designed a set of new custom icons that worked with their existing system.

The Gottman Card Decks app is an excellent tool for brand awareness and reaches couples that may not have previously heard of the Gottman Institute.
Therapists have been keen to recommend the app for take-home exercises to couples engaged in Gottman Therapy. Recently, the app was expanded to include the “Bringing Baby Home” module for new parents.
